Hinge Topological Optimization

The goal of this assignment was to test how topological optimization can enhance designs and create forms that wouldn't otherwise be thought of.  Moreover, these interesting designs are ideally suited for additive manufacturing, as the natural curves aren't conducive to traditional manufacturing techniques.  To come up with an interesting design, one has to provide interesting questions for the program.  What my team and I focused on was: how do we constrain the program to create a functional hinge?  What forces and what magnitude of those forces be to augment the design?  Is the resulting design actually functional or only functional in theory?
